Hiker Challenge: Dominica’s Waitukubuli National Trail

The world’s newest long-distance walking trail follows a 115-mile path of breathtaking beauty on the Caribbean island of Dominica. The Waitukubuli National Trail (WNT) covers the length of the Nature Island and is the only trail of its kind in the Caribbean.

The trail traverses the island, leading visitors into the heart of local communities, while passing by mountainous landscapes, through rainforests and past rivers and waterfalls. Dominica, a spectacular green island of rugged mountains, rainforests and rushing rivers in the Eastern Caribbean, is a haven for adventure travelers seeking a unique vacation experience.

Tour operators on the island are offering a variety of WNT hikes, ranging from day trips to two-week itineraries for visitors who want to complete the entire trail during their stay.

Experiences Caribbean now offers hiking enthusiasts the dream in adventure vacations–hiking all 14 segments of the WNT during a two-week stay in the lush green paradise known as Dominica. Walking the trail in its entirety tests the mettle of the most ardent and experienced walker. For the less adventurous hiker, the trail offers grassy paths that meander alongside cooling streams and pass gently through green valleys.

The beautifully rugged nature of the island is at the forefront as the trek traverses the island’s mountainous interior, enters the Morne Trois Pitons World Heritage site, climbs the slopes of steaming rain forests and descends dramatic gorges. The trail crosses countless rivers while taking in spectacular waterfalls and steaming sulphur springs. The segments pass through old plantations, skirt along coastal cliffs, meander through fertile farm lands and pass along slave and Kalinago traces with stops in small, secluded villages.

The cost of the 14-day WNT tour from Experiences Caribbean begins at $2,850 USD per person and includes airport and daily transfers, overnight accommodations at some of Dominica’s top retreats and resorts, meals and beverages and guide services. Seven, 10 and 12-day options are also available.

Ken’s Hinterland Adventures Tours of Dominica also offers tours that lead visitors along segments of the WNT and beyond. With the eight-day Hike O’ Rama package, avid hikers explore the jungle, mountains, rainforest and waterfalls on the Nature Island. For a shorter hike, trail guides will lead hikers along WNT Segment 3, passing through four villages, agricultural lands and rainforests for $60 USD for the day trip. During the 6 to 7-hour hike, participants witness amazing views of the Caribbean coast and scenic mountains within the Morne Trois Pitons National Park. The tour operator also offers hikes to other Dominica destinations, including the Boiling Lake; Cross Island Hike, including Freshwater Lake; and Boli Falls.
