Treasure Beach on Jamaica’s South Coast is now ready to welcome incentive groups of all sizes following the completion of the General Colin Powell Challenge Course. The facility was designed to build resilience and leadership skills in young people and adults alike. The course is named in honor of former United States Secretary of State Colin Powell, whose parents are from Treasure Beach.

Phase One of the project, which includes five low rope elements and one high rope 45 ft. climbing wall, was opened by former U.S. Ambassador to Jamaica Pamela Bridgewater and has been in operation since November 2013.

The facility was constructed through a partnership with General Colin Powell, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), BREDS/The Treasure Beach Foundation, Ohrstrom Foundation and the Jamaica Public Service Company, with support from the Engineering Regiment of the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF).

“The General Colin Powell Challenge Course provides us with a great opportunity to promote the South Coast and its unique offerings. As we increase our efforts to further develop our product to add to the appeal of the destination, visitors to Treasure Beach will now be able to take advantage of the group activities being offered by BREDS/Treasure Beach Foundation,” said Jamaica’s Director of Tourism John Lynch.

The course is designed to take participants through a series of physical and mental challenges under the supervision of trained facilitators. It uses a combination of methods proven to instill confidence and foster a sense of camaraderie, trust and co-operation among participants.

The facility primarily targets young people considered at-risk or facing other difficulties, although others, especially those demonstrating strong leadership potential, will also benefit.
