With no military, Costa Rica has long been known as the most peaceful nation in Central America. Its citizens fight mainly for the environment. As the second most sought-after eco-destination next to the Amazon, the relatively small country in Central America treasures its prized and plentiful diversity—from rainforests and volcanic mountains, to plains and powdery beaches.

Annually, these devout people mark their commitment during EcoWeek Costa Rica—a Celebration of the Environment and Culture of Costa Rica. This year, from August 13–19, activities began with the Green Living Fair in San Jose, where the general public enjoyed exhibits for 3 days on Green Living, Green Communities, Eco Travel, Medical Tourism, Cultural activities and entertainment.

An exciting menu of nature, adventure, aquatic and health related programs was offered to the North American traveler as incentives to visit. Packages included Dixon Green Golf Celebrity Tournament, Yoga and Wellness Retreats, Acupuncture & Wellness. Green Living Fair, EcoPhoto Challenge, EcoSnorkel Treasure Hunt, and Kids EcoAdventures. All were available to travel agents and consumers, with generous commissions paid for bookings.

In Guanacaste, known worldwide for its majestic Pacific Ocean vistas, the country’s first-ever Green Golf Tournament—the Dixon Golf and Hacienda Pinella—was held. This completely “green” contest on a course certified by Audubon using 100% biodegradable balls bowed to conservation in every respect. Over 300 trees were planted to make the event carbon offset. Social responsibility was observed too, by helping kids through two local charities—Aldeas SOS and Fundacion Guanacaste. Celebrities Robert Brooks, former NFL player with the Green Bay Packers, actor Josh Duhamel, as well as Black Eyed Peas’ stunning Fergie joined the crowd.

EcoWeek Costa Rica turned out to be the largest organized ecotourism event ever to be produced for the green traveler, and a delightful opportunity to experience the country’s biodiversity and culture. With many different activities and celebrations planned as well as great prizes next year—Green Golf with a Million-Dollar Shootout, Hole-in-One deluxe prizes and many Eco Sport Fishing Tournament prizes, it will be easy for agents to offer good discounts and exclusive packages to the annual event while earning top commissions.
