The Cancun Convention & Visitors Bureau has announced Cancun’s position as Mexico’s top destination by Expedia. According to 2012 third quarter results, travel to Mexico on Expedia group sites worldwide grew more than 20 percent compared to 2011, with Cancun being the most popular. In addition, Cancun was also recognized as America’s top travel destination for 2011 by Orbitz Travel Index.

The Orbitz Insider ranking is based on all air bookings made on Orbitz.com for travel between January 1 and December 31, 2011. According to Orbitz, it was “warm climates and adventure activities” that most enticed vacationers to travel abroad; making Cancun an obvious choice for many.

Expedia’s recognition comes on the heels of Cancun experiencing one of the best summer seasons in recent years with an approximate 88 percent hotel occupancy rate. New hotels in the destination have also increased interest in new amenities and all-inclusive options like Secrets The Vine and the Hard Rock Cancun, as well as extensive renovations to properties like that of Moon Palace Golf & Spa Resort and LIVE Aqua Cancun.

Events like the first ever Holbox Gastronomic Festival and cultural celebrations such as the Day of the Dead have enticed millions of visitors to enjoy the vast array of offerings in the region. Mexico remains a popular destination among Expedia and Hotels.com consumers worldwide with the majority of international demand for Mexico coming from travelers in the US, Canada and Brazil.
