Military Historical Tours is providing a chartered tour in May to Tawara Atoll for the best viewing of one of the longest total eclipses in a lifetime with more more than 6 minutes of total annularity. Dubbed “Operation Sunblock” the tour will provide a remarkable opportunity for those lucky enough to participate. These eclipses are rare and exciting, and because of the unique location this one will provide the most spectacular and amazing view of an eclipse afforded on this planet in 2013.

An annular eclipse occurs when the Sun and Moon are exactly in line, but the apparent size of the Moon is smaller than that of the Sun. Hence the Sun appears as a very bright ring, or annulus, surrounding the dark disk of the Moon. The view from Tarawa will be in the center of the antumbra, making it even more stunning than a partial or complete eclipse viewed from the penumbra or even the umbra.

This tour is $2,199 and runs from May 5-14.  Pre and post tours are also available to Guadalcanal & Fiji and the Solomon Islands.

MHT has provided tours since 1987 and this will be the second time it has provided eclipse tours. The company, founded by retired Marine Colonel Warren Wiedhahn, himself a Korean and Vietnam War Veteran, was created from his vision of providing fellow Veterans, their Families and Friends, Historians, Educators and Students alike, the opportunity to re-visit the battlefields of the past. In recent years the company has expanded and began educational and adventure tours in addition to being the only authorized charter company to revisit Iwo Jima.
