João Pinto With The Victoria Hotel Manager Kevin Callus

Former Portugal’s and Benfica’s stalwart João Pinto stayed at the Victoria Hotel in Sliema during his recent visit to Malta as head of the delegation of the U17 National team of Portugal.

Despite never tasting success outside Portugal, the diminutive striker has been bracketed in the same batch of players from Portugal’s so-called golden generation alongside the likes of Luis Figo, Fernando Couto and Rui Costa.

A record of 81 appearances and 23 goals with the Portuguese national team speaks for itself as Pinto played in Euro 1996, Euro 2000 and the 2002 World Cup.

Pinto is often remembered for his decisive contribution in Portugal’s famous 3-2 comeback win over Kevin Keegan’s England at Euro 2000 where he scored a brilliant header in a victory that launched his national on a memorable run to the semifinals.

While staying at the Victoria Hotel, Pinto had the opportunity to wine and dine the hotel’s restaurants The Copperfield’s Restaurant and Penny Black Bar.
